It was the kind of thing Brian Smith never expected to happen to him. The man from Salt Lake City, Utah, was let go from him job last February. He then applied to 180 new positions, with no luck.

Evicted from his home, he’d stay in hotels, couches, and cars, just about any place he could find. For 10 months, his faith in humanity became eroded. He even contemplated suicide. He said he would try and make it until the new year.

“In the blink of an eye, life can really take a turn on you quickly,” Brian said. “These last 10 months, I’ve lost my faith in humanity, in God, in life. There were many times when shotguns looked very tempting.”

During his job hunt, he saw a localnews segment about a Utah clothing company giving away suits to the homeless to help them feel more confident at job interviews. In his last efforts, Brian thought he would reach out to the organization.

“The power of that first impression … You can’t put a price on confidence,” said B.J. Stringham, president of Utah Woolen Mills, the business giving away the suits.

Brian received the suit on a Saturday, interviewed for a job the following Monday, and was told he’d gotten the poston Tuesday. Brian was brought to tears by the generosity.

“I didn’t think it would happen to me, and it did, and I owe them so much,” he said. “I thank them from the bottom of my heart.”

It’s kindness like this that truly makes the world a better place.
