(CNN)The man accused of shooting two technology workers from India and another man at a bar in Kansas last week had his first court appearance on Monday in a high-profile case that is being investigated as a possible hate crime.

Adam Purinton, 51, faces one charge of first-degree murder and two charges of attempted first-degree murder in last Wednesday's shooting in Olathe that killed one person and injured two others.

The incident has raised worries among Indians and other communities about possible violence against foreign workers in the United States.

A motive has not yet been established, and the FBI is looking into the case to determine whether the shootings would be considered federal hate crimes.

Appearing in court via video conference, Purinton looked haggard and was soft-spoken. He was assigned a court-appointed attorney, and his bond remains set at $2 million. His next court date is March 9.

What allegedly happened

The incident began after a man became agitated with two 32-year-old Indian men, Srinivas Kuchibhotla and Alok Madasani, at Austins Bar & Grill, witness Jeremy Luby told CNN.

Ian Grillot, a regular at the bar, approached the man and asked him to leave, according to CNN affiliate KMBC.

"He said (to Grillot), 'Why are you standing up for them?' He emphasized 'them,' as if 'them' was a derogatory term," Luby told CNN.

The suspect left the bar and drove away, according to Grillot. He allegedly returned later and allegedly opened fire in the bar, according to prosecutors.

One witness reportedly heard the suspect yell, "Get out of my country" before shooting, the Kansas City Star reports, though police have not corroborated that report.

Kuchibhotla was killed. Madasani and Grillot survived, according to authorities.

Grillot, who was shot in the hand and chest, was praised as a hero for attempting to intervene and subdue the suspect, he said in a video from his hospital bed.

Purinton was arrested hours later at an Applebee's restaurant in Clinton, Missouri, about 70 miles away from Olathe.

In 911 calls released by CNN affiliate KSHB, an Applebee's bartender told police that a man had admitted to shooting two "Iranian" people in Olathe and was looking for a place to hide.

'Rage and malice'

On Sunday, Madasani spoke at a vigil in Olathe set up to honor Kuchibhotla, his co-worker and best friend, according to CNN affiliate KCTV.

"It was rage and malice in an individual's heart that killed my friend, killed our friend," Madasani said. "It's an isolated incident that doesn't reflect the true spirit of Kansas, Midwest and United States."

Kuchibhotla and Madasani both worked at Garmin, the tech company that makes GPS devices.

Kuchibhotla's widow said that she had been worried about violence against foreigners in the United States, but Kuchibhotla had told her not to worry.

"I told him many times, 'Should we think about going back? Should we think about going to a different country?' He said, 'No,' " Sunayana Dumala said, according to video recorded by KCTV.

Former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton tweeted a link to an article on the shooting and called on President Donald Trump to "step up and speak out" against "threats and hate crimes."

Jeff Sessions Issues Ominous Warning On State Marijuana Legalization

WASHINGTON Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Monday restated his opposition to marijuana use and offered an ominous warning about state-level marijuana legalization efforts, suggesting that such policies would open states to violence, as well as potential repercussions from the federal government.

I dont think America is going to be a better place when people of all ages, and particularly young people, are smoking pot, Sessions said to reporters Monday at the Department of Justice. I believe its an unhealthy practice, and current levels of THC in marijuana are very high compared to what they were a few years ago, and were seeing real violence around that.

Sessions said he had a meeting on Monday with the attorney general of Nebraska, who is very concerned about marijuana flowing in from Colorado, which legalized weed in 2012. Experts are telling me theres more violence around marijuana than one would think and theres big money involved, he said.

Nebraska has been pushing back against its neighbor states marijuana laws for years. In 2014, Nebraska, along with Oklahoma, filed a federal lawsuit against Colorado in an attempt to invalidate its nascent laws allowing the sale of recreational marijuana, which the states claimed was increasing trafficking of the drug into their states. The Supreme Court dismissed the suit last year.

You cant sue somebody for drug debt; the only way to get your money is through strong-arm tactics, and violence tends to follow that, Sessions said.

States, they can pass the laws they choose, he added. I would just say it does remain a violation of federal law to distribute marijuana throughout any place in the United States, whether a state legalizes it or not.

His comments appear to line up with White House Press Secretary Sean Spicers comments last week that opened the door for a Trump administration crackdown on recreational marijuana.

Spicer raised concerns among advocates for marijuana policy reform when he said states that have legalized recreational marijuana will see greater enforcement of federal laws surrounding the plant. Spicer explained that President Donald Trump sees the legalization of medical and recreational marijuana as two separate issues, and while the president understands the importance of the drugs availability for medical purposes, Spicer said recreational use of the drug is something the Department of Justice will be looking into.

Spicers statements marked a shift from Trumps own remarks during his campaign, when he repeatedly said he would respect states rights on the issue.

Marijuana remains illegal under the federal Controlled Substances Act, despite statesefforts to scale back on criminalizing the plant over the past few years. Legal recreational marijuana has been approved in eight states and Washington, D.C., which continues to ban sales, unlike the state programs. A total of 28 states have legalized marijuana for medical purposes.

Former President Barack Obamas Justice Department allowed states to forge their own way on marijuana policy with guidance urging federal prosecutors to refrain from targeting state-legal marijuana operations. But this guidance is not law and can be reversed by the Trump administration.Sessions said they were looking at the memos that set out enforcement priorities, which he said had some points of value.

Trumps selection of Sessions to head the DOJ alarmed drug policy reformers who view the former Alabama senator as a drug war dinosaur. Thats because Sessions has long held retrograde views on marijuana and the disastrous war on drugs. During a Senate hearing last year, Sessions spoke out against weed and urged the federal government to send the message to the public that good people dont smoke marijuana. He went on to criticize Obama for not speaking out more forcefully against the drug, saying that we need grown-ups in Washington to say marijuana is not the kind of thing that ought to be legalized. In separate comments last year, Sessions also called the legalization of marijuana a mistake.

And while Sessions didnt appear to suggest there would be radical changes to federal enforcement of marijuana laws during his confirmation hearings last month, he only offeredvague answers about how he might approach the drug and left the door open for increased federal interference with states.

Drug policy reformers have raised concerns that Sessions could use the FBI to crack down on marijuana operations nationwide, or direct the Drug Enforcement Administration to enforce federal prohibition outside of the jurisdiction of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit. The court ruled in August that a federal rider blocks federal officials from prosecuting state-legal marijuana operators and patients. But that rider must be re-approved annually, and if its allowed to expire, Sessions could then order the DEA to enforce federal law nationally. He could also sue the various state governments that have set up regulatory schemes.

Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit substance in the United States, and the trend of states bucking prohibition in favor of legal regulation of the plant reflects a broad cultural shift toward greater acceptance of marijuana. National support for the legalization of the drug has risen dramatically in recent years, recently reaching historic highs in multiple polls. And states like Colorado, the first to establish a regulated adult-use marijuana marketplace, have seen successes that have debunked some lawmakers and law enforcers predictions that such policies would result in disaster.

A survey from Quinnipiac University released last week found a strong majority of American voters 71 percent want the federal government to respect state marijuana laws. In that survey, majorities of Republicans, Democrats, independents and every age group polled agreed the feds should not enforce prohibitionist laws on states that have legalized marijuana.

Marijuana policy reform advocates said Sessions comments actually show the need for further reform.

By talking about marijuana and violence, the attorney general is inadvertently articulating the strongest argument that exists for legalization, which is that it allows regulated markets in a way that prohibition does not, said Tom Angell, chairman of drug policy reform group Marijuana Majority. The only connection between marijuana and violence is the one that exists when illegal sellers battle it out for profits in the black market.

The cop ended up developing a very close friendship with the veteran, whom he now considers to be an uncle of sorts. He accompanies him tothe hospital, and now the elderly man is making incredible progress. For instance, he can now stand up on his own!

Charles, who has no immediate family, has someone to keep him company for as long as he needs. And with his son away at school, Chris can spend his free time with his new friend!

Australian arrested for helping ISIS develop long-range missile technology

(CNN)An Australian man has been charged with allegedly helping ISIS to develop "high-tech" missile capabilities.

The 42-year-old was taken into custody in the small rural New South Wales town of Young by the Australian Federal Police.

In a statement, the Australian Federal Police said the man had been researching and designing both a laser warning system to detect incoming Syrian and Iraqi munitions and long-range guided missiles for the terrorist group.

He's facing three charges which, if he's found guilty, carry a maximum penalty of life in prison.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told reporters Tuesday the arrest highlighted that support for ISIS wasn't limited to Australia's major cities.

The

"We've seen Australians arrested for preparations to carry out terrorist acts or providing financial assistance to terrorist groups, we've seen Australians travel to the conflict zone to take up arms for (ISIS)," he said.

Turnbull said there had been no attack planned inside Australia.

Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Counter Terrorism Ian McCartney said in a statement the arrest had followed more than 18 months of investigations.

The arrest comes less than two months after a terrorist attack intended for Christmas Day was thwarted in Melbourne, Australia.

Six people were taken into custody for planning to explode "improvised explosive devices" at locations around the city center.

Georgia couple gets prison for racist threats at child’s birthday party

(CNN)A Georgia couple who rode with a Confederate flag-waving group that made armed threats against African-Americans at a child's birthday party were sentenced to prison Monday.

Jose "Joe" Torres, was sentenced to 20 years, with 13 years in prison, after a jury convicted him on three counts of aggravated assault, one count of making terroristic threats and one count of violating of Georgia's Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act.

Kayla Norton was sentenced to 15 years, with six years in prison. She was convicted on one count of making terroristic threats and one count of violation of the Street Gang Act.

"Many people tried to make the case about simply flying the Confederate Battle Flag," Douglas County District Attorney Brian Fortner said in a statement. "This case was about a group of people riding around our community, drinking alcohol, harassing and intimidating our citizens because of the color of their skin."

On July 25, 2015, Torres and Norton, joined about a dozen other people in a convoy of pickup trucks waving large Confederate flags as they drove around Douglas County, a suburban Atlanta community. Most of them belonged to a group called "Respect the Flag."

"The convoy of trucks passed by the victim's residence where the victims were grilling hot dogs and hamburgers while hosting a child's birthday party featuring a bouncy castle, snow-cone machines, and a DJ," the district attorney's office posted on its official Facebook page.

The party-goers said the people in the trucks yelled racial slurs as they passed, the statement said.

The drivers parked the trucks near the house, prosecutors said. Torres was part of a smaller group that "threatened to kill the party goers while repeatedly using derogatory racial slurs against them," said the statement.

"Torres, who had retrieved a shotgun from his vehicle, pointed his shotgun at the group of African American party-goers and stated he was going to kill them while his co-defendants stated that 'the little ones can get one too,' referring to the young children at the party," the statement said.

Norton was accused of making similar threats. The victims said some member of Torres' group was armed with a knife and a tire tool.

According to the district attorney's statement, Torres testified he carried the shotgun because he feared for his friends' safety. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported members of "Respect the Flag" said people at the party had thrown objects at them.

CNN has tried to reach the two defendants' lawyers for comment.

After the arrests, investigators looked through the defendants' Facebook accounts, the statement said.

"Law enforcement was able to locate numerous posts and messages indicating that members of the group were white supremacists who discussed attending KKK rallies, joining Skinheads Nation, and making numerous derogatory remarks about African Americans as a whole," the DA's statement said.

Video of Monday's sentencing shot by WSB-TV, a CNN affiliate, showed both Torres and Norton breaking down in court as Judge William McClain handed down the sentence.

Norton apologized for her role in the incident saying, "I want you all to know that is not me. That is not me, that is not him. I would never walk up to you and say those words to you. I'm so sorry that happened to you. I am so sorry."

Hyesha Bryant, one of the people at the party, testified at the hearing and told Norton, "What you said affected my life. It affected my children's lives."

But Bryant ended up telling Norton that "I forgive you, I forgive all of you."

A jury convicted Torres and Norton on February 6. They are both banished from Douglas County when they're released from prison.

Fifteen members of the Respect the Flag group were originally indicted. The disposition of all their cases is unknown, but the district attorney said some of them pleaded guilty to similar charges and received shorter sentences.

Issa renews call for independent prosecutor on Russia

Washington (CNN)Rep. Darrell Issa doubled down on statements he made over the weekend urging for an independent investigation of communications between President Donald Trump's presidential campaign and Russians known to US intelligence.

"The American people need a clear-eyed view of the nefarious actions of the Russian government," the California Republican said in a statement Monday.

"Right now, we have speculation and assumptions, but not clarity and fact, including questions about Russia's actions, what the FBI knew of the cyberbreaches, what the Obama administration did in response and potential actions of former national security adviser Michael Flynn," he continued. "Any review conducted must have the full confidence of the American people, which is why I recommended an independent review."

Issa -- who supported Trump in the 2016 presidential election -- said Friday on HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" that Attorney General Jeff Sessions should step aside and an independent prosecutor should be appointed because Sessions campaigned for Trump.

Earlier Monday, Issa appeared to qualify his statement on HBO, telling CBS News he could see how a special prosecutor would be appropriate if "there is an allegation of a crime at some point."

But, he added, "I think it's very important to realize there's been no allegation by any part of this administration or by anyone who's been to the hearings about any crimes."

Flynn was forced to resign earlier this month after acknowledging he did not provide Vice President Mike Pence with a full account of his communications with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak -- conversations that involved US sanctions.

Then last week, multiple US officials told CNN that the FBI rejected a White House request to publicly knock down media reports about communications between Trump's associates and Russians known to US intelligence during the presidential campaign.

But Sessions has not been quick to weigh in on the matter.

Speaking to reporters at the Justice Department on Monday, he said, "I will recuse myself from anything I need to recuse myself from" when specifically asked whether he would step aside.

As for the propriety of conversations between the White House and FBI, Sessions emphasized that the FBI and Department of Justice "have to remain independent."

"But every contact is not improper," Sessions added.

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump said he believes former President Barack Obama has been behind the leaks within his administration and the sizable, angry town hall crowds Republicans have faced across the country.

Trump was asked in an interview on Fox News' "Fox and Friends" if he believed Obama was responsible for the town hall protests against Republicans this month.

"It turns out his organization seems to do a lot of these organizing to some of the protests that these Republicans are seeing around the country against you. Do you believe President Obama is behind it and if he is, is that a violation of the so-called unsaid presidents' code?" Trump was asked.

"No, I think he is behind it. I also think it is politics, that's the way it is," Trump replied.

Trump then discussed the leaks that have disrupted his first month in office.

"You never know what's exactly happening behind the scenes. You know, you're probably right or possibly right, but you never know," Trump said in the interview, a clip of which was released Monday night. "No, I think that President Obama is behind it because his people are certainly behind it. And some of the leaks possibly come from that group, which are really serious because they are very bad in terms of national security. But I also understand that is politics. In terms of him being behind things, that's politics. And it will probably continue."

Trump did not offer any evidence for his claim in the clip released by Fox Monday night. CNN has reached out to Obama's office for comment.

A broad coalition of groups including Organizing For Action, the SEIU, MoveOn.org and the Center for American Progress have been working to help with grassroots organizing around GOP town halls.

Organizing for Action, the group formed from Obama's campaign organization, has 14 professional organizers, for example, who are involved in teaching local activists skills to effectively vocalize opposition to the GOP's top agenda items.

Earlier this month, Trump told Fox News that reports of his calls with the leaders of Mexico and Australia were caused by leaks from "Obama people."

Trump's administration has been beset by leaks within his administration to the media, and he has continually railed against those doing the leaking and the media since taking office. He has said the leaks are damaging to national security.

Kuchibhotla and Madasani both worked at Garmin, the tech company that makes GPS devices.

Kuchibhotla's widow said that she had been worried about violence against foreigners in the United States, but Kuchibhotla had told her not to worry.

"I told him many times, 'Should we think about going back? Should we think about going to a different country?' He said, 'No,' " Sunayana Dumala said, according to video recorded by KCTV.

Former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton tweeted a link to an article on the shooting and called on President Donald Trump to "step up and speak out" against "threats and hate crimes."

Of all of this years expected Oscar wins, Viola Davis might be the most gratifying.

The actress performance in Fences moved critics and viewers, earning her an Academy Award nomination for the third time this time, in the Best Actress in a Supporting Role category.

In her acceptance speech, Davis said,People ask me all the time, what kind of stories do you want to tell, Viola? And I say, exhume those bodies, exhume those stories, the stories of the people who dreamed.

She continued, I became an artist, and thank god I did, because we are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life. So heres to August Wilson, who exhumed and exalted the ordinary people.

She continued to praise the playwright behind Fences, which she described as, a movie that is about people, and words, and life, and forgiveness, and grace.

The win is especially powerful in light of the films themes. Davis played Rose Maxson, the pragmatic housewife of Troy Maxson, and a woman who did what she could to keep her family thriving amid turmoil.

Davis tenacity, too, is an inspiration.

(CNN)Boxing legend and Filipino senator Manny Pacquiao has announced a date for this next fight -- April 23 -- against former British lightweight Olympic champion Amir Khan.

Khan, who won a silver medal in 2004, confirmed on Twitter that his team had agreed to Pacquiao's terms and would meet him for a "super fight."

Pacquiao and Khan are no strangers to one another: They were both trained together by Freddie Roach.

In mid-February, Pacquiao asked his Twitter followers who he should fight "next in the UAE" -- Khan was the overwhelming favorite, winning 48% of the votes cast.

It has not yet been disclosed where the fight will take place.

Pacquiao last year won two consecutive victories, defeating Timothy Bradley in April and then emerging with a win against Jessie Vargas in November.

Khan's last fight was in April last year, when Mexican Saul "Canelo" Alvarez knocked him out with a massive blow.

Boxer or senator?

Pacquiao said in a statement in July that his priority is the legislature, and that a fight would not interfere with his senatorial duties.

He was criticized for his absences when he served as a Representative,CNN Philippines reported.

Pacquiao has justified his return to the ring by saying that boxing is his only means to support his family.

"Politics, to me, is a vocation not a means to eke out a living," Pacquiao said in the statement.

According to a 2015 statement listing his assets and liabilities, the boxer-turned-politician was worth about $69 million.

Pacquiao is a firm political ally of Philippines president Rodrigo Duterte, and has often been discussed as a future presidential candidate.

He's also been an outspoken critic of Duterte rival Senator Leila de Lima, who was arrested last week on drugs-related charges -- sparking a protest in Manila.

Washington (CNN)Bill Owens, the father of the Navy SEAL killed in a late-January raid in Yemen, leveled biting criticism at the White House and called for an investigation into his son's death in a news story published Sunday.

Owens told The Miami Herald that as his son William "Ryan" Owens' body made it to Dover Air Force Base outside Washington, he was told President Donald Trump was coming to meet him and his wife to pay his respects.

But Owens told the chaplain he didn't want to see the commander-in-chief.

"I told them I didn't want to make a scene about it, but my conscience wouldn't let me talk to him," Owens told the newspaper.

Owens, himself a veteran, raised a number of questions about the raid itself.

"Why at this time did there have to be this stupid mission when it wasn't even barely a week into his administration," the paper quoted him as asking.

Owen, the Herald reported, hadn't voted for the President, and he took issue with how Trump treated the Gold Star family of Captain Humayun Khan after the slain soldier's mother and father publicly rebuked the then-Republican presidential nominee at the Democratic National Convention in July.

The administration responded to CNN's request for comment on the story by commending Owen's son, the slain Navy SEAL, for his service and defending the raid.

"Chief Petty Officer Owens is an American hero who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of his country," White House spokesman Michael Short said in a statement. "The mission he participated in yielded valuable intelligence in the ongoing fight against radical Islamic terrorism. The United States is safer today thanks to his bravery and years of faithful service in uniform. We will be forever in his debt."

The Yemen raid, which the White House has said was intended to gather intelligence, immediately came under scrutiny for resulting in the first combat death under Trump's presidency. In addition to Owens' death, several other service members were injured, and reports have said as many as two dozen civilians, or more, were killed, including an eight-year-old daughter of the deceased al Qaeda leader Anwar al-Awlaki, an American citizen who was killed in a drone strike in 2011.

The White House has insisted that the raid was a success. But some, including Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, have taken issue with the White House's framing.

The former prisoner of war said in a statement, "I would not describe any operation that results in the loss of American life as a success."

But the White House has bristled at any criticism, claiming such comments dishonor the life of Owens' son, the Navy SEAL who died in the raid.

Owens took issue with the White House's response, telling The Miami Herald, "Don't hide behind my son's death to prevent an investigation."

"I want an investigation. ... The government owes my son an investigation," he said.

Sources told CNN that three military investigations of the raid are underway: one to look at civilian deaths, another to look at the crash landing of one of the aircraft involved, and a third to look into Owens' killing, as is standard practice when there is a combat death.

A White House official confirmed to CNN that there is an "ongoing DoD investigation" and anticipated it would take a few months, after which a redacted version of the findings will become publicly available under the Freedom of Information Act.

Owens did not immediately return requests from CNN for comment on Sunday.

The White House official who spoke with CNN said the mission was thoroughly vetted and planning had begun months before during the Obama administration.

"There's risks with every military op that you take," the official said.

The official added that the ground commander of the operation made the decision to proceed with the mission despite knowing the team had "lost the element of surprise," possibly due in part to the noise of drones overhead.

Although Owens and his wife declined to meet with Trump in early February, the President and his daughter Ivanka met with other members of the Owens family, The Miami Herald reported.

Trump mentioned as much at the swearing-in of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on February 1, saying: "Just returned from an amazing visit with a great, great family at Dover, and it was something -- very sad, very beautiful. Ryan, a great man."
