Biologists now accept that we are in the midst of a sixth mass extinction event, as humans alter and change the environment at such as pace that wildlife cannot keep up. While the big ticket species like tigers and polar bears garner much of the attention as their numbers dwindle, worryingly little is reported about the plants and animals that are likely to have a major impact on our food supply.
According to a new report, we are at risk of overlooking the impact that these extinctions will have on the crops we grow, something which sustains every single one of the 7 billion people on Earth. And if you think that this is something to worry about at some point in the future, well, already a shocking 940 cultivated species are already under threat of reduced productivity and extinction.
From coffee production that has halved in Tanzania since the 1960s, to the warnings that cacao trees will not be able to survive in Ghana – where 70 percent of our chocolate originates – if global temperatures surpass 2°C in warming, to the fact that 22 percent of all wild potato species are slowly disappearing, there is a crisis rapidly brewing. And even though this is of a direct consequence to us and our own survival, there seems agonizingly little concern.
“Agrobiodiversity – the edible plant and animal species that feed each and every one of us – holds the key to future food security,” explained Ann Tutwiler, director general of Bioversity International, who published the new report. “But we are failing to protect it, and tap into its potential to transform our food system for the better.”
One of the most troubling aspects of the current agricultural business is the heavy reliance on just a handful of species. It is thought that out of around 7,000 species of plants that can be used as food, just thirty are used to feed the world, and out of these, only three species – wheat, rice, and maize – account for roughly 50 percent of all plant calories consumed globally.
This concentrated dependency on just a few crops delivers a serious risk to our food supply, particularly as the sixth mass extinction of wildlife sets in. All it would take is for one disease to emerge that could wipe out vast swathes of crops across massive regions, threatening the survival of millions in the process, such as was seen during the potato famine in Ireland in the late 1840s.
The authors of the report recommend that we start to diversify, and bring a far more varied number of crops and plants into our diets and the agricultural industry in order to preserve and protect our future food supply.

President Donald Trump criticized former President Barack Obama for gas prices rising in the past. But with Hurricane Harvey expected to push gas prices higher, it raises the question: Can a president really affect the price of gas?
The short answer? No.
In 2012, Trump tweeted that gas prices were set to hit a “record high” ahead of Labor Day, adding that Obama could have “stopped” the price increase.

Several years later, Trump appears to think that he is now in a position to stop prices from increasing, judging from his past statements.
White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders did not immediately respond to a request for comment by the Daily Dot about what specifically Trump thinks he can do to stop Americans from seeing a surge in gas prices, as he suggested Obama could have done.
While gas is averaging $2.40 a gallon currently, that number is expected to climb ahead of the Labor Day holiday weekend, as gasoline futures—which reflect wholesale prices and eventually set the market for consumers—spiked 6 percent on Wednesday after flooding from Hurricane Harvey shut down one of the largest refineries in the United States. Gas futures have risen 13 percent since Friday, before Harvey made landfall in Texas.
Rising gas futures is directly related to paying more at the pump. “Retailers can either go out of business or pass their costs along,” Tom Kloza, director of global energy analysis at the Oil Price Information Service, told CNN.
So can Trump do something to save everyone’s wallets as they fill up the tank before the holiday weekend? Probably not.
Domestic production of gas increased during the Obama administration, but the United States still buys much of the oil it consumes from other countries. Essentially, gas prices are determined by supply and demand, not a stroke of a pen by the president.
While presidents can expand the production of gas domestically, it likely wouldn’t have too much of an effect on the price you see at gas stations when you fill up your car.
Also, economists argue, the price of gas rises during good economic circumstances and lowers during a bad economy, as demand for the gas is lower.
So unless Trump has a plan to tank the U.S. economy, we should expect to see similar prices at the pumps this holiday weekend—which, all told, is probably a better option for everyone.

White House senior adviser Jared Kushner has reportedly conducted government-related business while using a private email account. According to the explosive report on Sunday by Politico, Kushner’s private email was set up during the presidential transition―after his father-in-law, Donald Trump, won the 2016 election―and he’s reportedly been using it since. Politico reported other unnamed administration officials have also used private email accounts while working for the government.
The report specifies that Kushner has not solely used his private account and that he has used his official government account for White House business, as well. Politico claims it’s reviewed two dozen emails sent from his personal account.
In the context of last year’s presidential race, this is a major story. Throughout the 2016 election, then-candidate Trump spent months condemning and castigating Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton over her use of a private email server during her tenure as secretary of state, insisting it showed she was too reckless and untrustworthy to serve as president.

Ever since winning the election and entering office, however, the people around Trump have reportedly engaged in similar behavior. It was reported in January that at least four senior Trump staffers―Kushner, Steve Bannon, Kellyanne Conway, and Sean Spicer―still possessed private email accounts through the Republican National Committee.
This new story, however, is different. Politico is not reporting that Kushner is using a private RNC account but rather private email on his own private server. This is essentially exactly what Clinton did while serving as secretary of state, and although it’s not his official job, Kushner has been characterized as a sort of shadow secretary of state within the Trump administration.
Kushner’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, sent Politico a statement about the private email, downplaying the significance of the story. Specifically, Lowell claimed Kushner typically has used the private email to forward along pieces of news or political commentary, has sent and received fewer than 100 messages through it since January, and has used his official White House email for any government business.
Said Lowell:
“Mr. Kushner uses his White House email address to conduct White House business. Fewer than 100 emails from January through August were either sent to or returned by Mr. Kushner to colleagues in the White House from his personal email account. These usually forwarded news articles or political commentary and most often occurred when someone initiated the exchange by sending an email to his personal rather than his White House address.”
Kushner’s wife, Ivanka Trump, reportedly has a private email account on the same server, although Politico didn’t get a look at any of her messages, and there’s no evidence she’s used it for White House business. When Clinton’s private email server became a matter of public knowledge back in 2015, it dominated both headlines and Republican-led committee hearings.
This report only adds to the pile of mounting concerns for Kushner. He’s also reportedly under scrutiny in independent counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election and whether any members of the Trump campaign aided or colluded in those efforts.

After facing a barrage of criticism pointing to his lack of response (or, evidently, interest), Trump confirmed on Tuesday that food, water, and other supplies were being shipped to the island and that he plans on visiting next week to assess the damage. One reason his administration was slow to respond? Puerto Rico "is in the middle of an ocean," he explained. "It's a big ocean. It's a very big ocean."

When President Trump pulled the United States out of the Paris climate agreement, many were worried that it could spell the end of the accord. The concern was that if as big a player as the US was to leave, other countries would see little point in remaining. But in a strange twist of fate, the reverse has happened.
Nations have doubled down on their commitments, and the current White House administration is even receiving a backlash from major business and industry players who want the regulations and targets because they know they are necessary. The latest corporation to hit back at the withdrawal is the confectionery giant Mars, who has announced that it is launching a $1 billion ‘Sustainability in a Generation’ plan. The aim is to tackle its carbon emissions while at the same time promote sustainable farming for its products.
Industries are now waking up to the fact that cutting emissions is not just about doing good or preventing climate change, but is actually just good business sense. By switching from fossil fuels to renewables the cost of energy drops once you recoup the initial investment as the energy is cheap. It’s as simple as that.
“This plan is about not just doing better, but doing what’s necessary. We’re doing this because it’s the right thing to do but also because it’s good business,” explained Grant F Reid, the chief executive of Mars. “We expect to have a competitive advantage from a more resource-efficient supply chain, and from ensuring that everyone in our supply chain is doing well.”
Mars has set out a plan to cut its greenhouse gas emissions across its supply chain by 67 percent by 2050. In addition to this, they will also set up projects aimed at reducing poverty for their suppliers and farmers in low-income countries, as well as improving the sustainability of the farming practices that they run.
The massive investment by the $35-billion company, which makes all sorts of confectionary from Skittles to Juicy Fruit, has been announced in the run up to the UN General Assembly and Climate Week that is taking place in New York later this month. Mars hopes that as such a big hitter in the business world, it will encourage other companies to make similar environmental commitments.
And it seems that this mentality is working. To date, 14 states that account for a third of the US population and just under 40 percent of the US’s GDP, have formed the United States Climate Alliance in which they will maintain their commitments to the Paris agreement, bypassing the White House and the President entirely.

It also sounds like we won't be seeing immortal cat Thackery Binx, zombie Billy Butcherson, or original protagonists Max, Allison, and Dani in the upcoming remake either. Reports say the new TV movie will star a completely new cast. This news shouldn't be too much of a shock to fans who have been following the sequel rumors that have been rampant for years now — Bette Midler denied any involvement in a follow-up movie point-blank back in 2015 when she responded to a Facebook Live question by saying:
After all these years and all the fan demand, I do believe I can stand and firmly say an unequivocal ‘no.'
It also sounds like the new remake will be shaking things up behind the camera as well. Scarlett Lacey, who is best known for her writing credits on E!'s British royal drama , will be penning the new script, and the original writers Neil Cuthbert and Mick Garris will reportedly not be involved. director Kenny Ortega will reportedly also not be back for the remake. Ortega has directed some of Disney Channel's most successful original movies alongside , including the franchise, and most recently . No word yet on who will be taking Ortega's spot as the director of the new movie. The only member of the original crew we know is back for the remake is producer David Kirschner, who will serve as an executive producer on the new movie.
Though this remake will clearly be a completely new take on the witchy original, it's still something for fans to celebrate. The 1993 Disney classic quickly developed a cult status among fans, many of whom have been clamoring for a sequel or some sort of follow-up for years. This popularity is credited to the fact that Disney-owned networks Disney Channel and Freeform (formerly ABC Family) continue to air several times each year around Halloween. For example, this October, Freeform is scheduled to air a whopping 16 times during its annual block.
While has risen to cult status among millennial audiences, it was never a critical darling. The movie received lukewarm reviews at best when it was released in 1993, with most critics calling it hokey and mediocre. Many critics at the time also balked at Disney starting off the flick with murders and hangings. still holds a lowly 30 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but as to be expected, its user rating is considerably higher.
The remake is reportedly still in early stages of development, so we don't have any clue on when it will be released yet. But I don't think it's too much of a jump to assume the team behind it would be looking to premiere around Halloween of next year. So get ready for even more Sanderson magic to be hitting Disney Channel in October 2018.
