The woman who invented Mother’s Day came to hate it

(CNN)Mother's Day means big business for retailers. This year is no different -- shoppers will spend an average of $180 per mom.

The holiday's founder worked so hard to get the world to give moms everywhere a shoutout. But before her death, even she had to admit she had some regrets about starting Mother's Day.
If she were alive now, she'd probably be living her worst nightmare.

She just wanted to honor her mom

Long before her death, Jarvis' mom Ann Reeves Jarvis hoped someone would dedicate a day to honor mothers. When she died on May 9, 1905, Jarvis set out to do just that. She began campaigning not only for her mom but for moms everywhere.
It started off with her hometown of Grafton, West Virginia, which takes credit for hosting the first official Mother's Day celebration three years later at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church. Since then, the church has been dubbed the "International Mother's Day Shrine."
In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill recognizing Jarvis' Mother's Day as a national holiday.

There's a reason 'mother' is singular

Jarvis was very intentional about the name of her holiday. It's Mother's Day — as in one mom. The way Jarvis put it, Mother's Day is a day to honor "the best mother who ever lived, yours."
But Mother's Day became way more popular than she expected. People today honor any mom-like figure in their lives.
    • A dying mother's plea for her life
    • Watch: Mom with terminal cancer sees her son graduate in special ceremony
    • 'The Atlas of Beauty': Mothers around the world
    • A Mother's Day poem for the world's greatest mom(s)!

So Jarvis disowned her own holiday

Jarvis couldn't stand the idea of people spending so much money on extravagant flower arrangements, sappy greeting cards and overly priced chocolates.
First, she went after florists, protesting their marketing of those beautiful and ornate carnations. Then, her protests escalated to arrests for public disturbances.
Jarvis didn't stop there. She went after first lady Eleanor Roosevelt for using Mother's Day as a way to promote the health and welfare of women and children. While it was true that Jarvis' mother was a community health advocate, Jarvis still didn't like the association.
Jarvis died in a sanitarium in 1948. The holiday she created lives on.
Today, more people purchase flowers and plants for Mother's Day than for any other holiday except Christmas/Hanukkah. This year alone, Americans will spend $23.1 billion on the holiday. And most of that money will be spent on jewelry: $4.6 billion.

What we know so far about the Santa Fe school shooting

(CNN)Nine students and a teacher were killed Friday morning in a shooting at Santa Fe High School in the southeastern Texas city of Santa Fe. It's the 22nd school shooting in the US in 2018. This is what we know:

    • 10 people are dead, a law enforcement official said.
    • Nine of those killed are students and one a teacher.
    • Two law enforcement officers are among those injured.
    • At least 13 people have been hospitalized.

      THE SUSPECT

      • Dimitrios Pagourtzis, 17, the suspect, appeared before a judge in Galveston County via video from the county jail. He is being charged with capital murder and aggravated assault of a public servant. He was denied bond and not asked to enter a plea.
      • He started attending Santa Fe High School in August 2015, according to his Facebook page.
      • He played on the 2016 Santa Fe JV football team. He appeared on the 2015/2016 boys freshman football team.
      • He showed interest in joining the US Marine Corps. On his Facebook bio, he claimed to be "starting in 2019." The military branch said it had no record of Pagourtzis filling out paperwork at a recruiting station.
      • The suspect showed signs of aggression or violence: Photos posted on Facebook on April 30, 2018 show a T-shirt emblazoned with the words, "BORN TO KILL," as well as a black duster jacket with Nazi, communist, fascist and religious symbols. Also, the background image of his profile page is the album cover of "Dangerous Days" by French electronic music artist "Perturbator." A song on that album is called "Humans Are Such Easy Prey."
      • A second person in custody is 18 years old and is believed to be a possible accomplice, but not the shooter, according to a law enforcement official.
      • The second suspect is also believed to be a student, an official said.

      WHAT HAPPENED

      • Sheriff's officials received reports of an active shooting at the school just before 8 a.m.
      • An armed person walked into an art class at the school and began firing what looked like a shotgun, a witness told CNN affiliate KTRK.
      • Pipe bombs and pressure cookers were found at the scene, according to a law enforcement official.
      • Investigators are searching a trailer nearby where it is believed explosive devices were assembled, according to a law enforcement source, who says a pressure cooker has been found.
      • Explosive devices are also found in surrounding areas.
      • Multiple agencies are on site, including the FBI, ATF, Texas Dept. of Public Safety, local law enforcement and first responders.

      REACTION

      • President Trump addressed the shooting at an unrelated White House event, saying: "This has been going on too long in our country."
      • Vice President Mike Pence: "I just want to assure all of you that we will continue to do everything in our power to bring safety and security to this nation. To do everything we can to make sure our schools are safe."
      • Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos said schools must be "safe and nurturing environments" and "we simply cannot allow this trend to continue."
      • Parents and students of Parkland offered condolences and reiterated that something needs to change.
      • Sen. John Cornyn of Texas says he plans to travel to Santa Fe this afternoon: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those injured and killed."
      • The Democratic mayor of Dallas slammed Congress: "Spare us your thoughts and prayers and do your job."
      • "History will not look kindly upon those elected officials who failed to act in the face of repeated mass murders of our children," Mayor Mike Rawlings said.
      • Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has directed flags be lowered to half-staff today through Tuesday.
      • The Houston Astros plan to hold a moment of silence before their game tonight to honor the victims.

      BACKGROUND

      • Santa Fe High School is slated to hold its Class of 2018 graduation ceremony Sunday at the High School auditorium, according to the Santa Fe Independent School District Website.
      • The high school has about 1,400 students, according to GreatSchools.org.
      • Santa Fe is a city of about 13,000 people roughly 20 miles northwest of Galveston and 30 miles southeast of Houston.

Cambridge Analytica ran voter suppressioncampaigns, whistleblower claims

Washington (CNN)The whistleblower whose disclosures about Cambridge Analytica shook the tech world over questions about users' data privacy told Congress on Wednesday that the company engaged in efforts to discourage or suppress voting.

"Mr. Bannon sees cultural warfare as the means to create enduring change in American politics. It was for this reason Mr. Bannon engaged SCL (Cambridge Analytica's parent company), a foreign military contractor, to build an arsenal of informational weapons he could deploy on the American population," Wylie claimed, referring to Trump's former top political adviser Steve Bannon.
Wylie did not provide specific evidence of voter suppression campaigns taking place in the US. But when asked by Sen. Chris Coons, D-Delaware, if one of Bannon's "goals was to suppress voting or discourage certain individuals in the US from voting," Wylie replied, "That was my understanding, yes."
After the hearing, Wylie told CNN that although he did not take part in voter suppression activities, he alleged that African-Americans were particular targets of Cambridge Analytica's "voter disengagement tactics," which he said were used to "discourage or demobilize certain types of people from voting," and that campaigns and political action committees requested voter suppression from Cambridge Analytica.
CNN has reached out to Bannon for comment.

        Alleged Russian ties

Wylie also outlined during his testimony how he believed it may have been possible for the Facebook data of American voters to have been obtained by entities in Russia.
Wylie highlighted how Cambridge University professor Aleksandr Kogan -- who has told CNN he gathered information on 30 million Americans through his Facebook personality test app in 2014, which he then passed to Cambridge Analytica -- made numerous trips to Russia, in part a result of his work with St. Petersburg University.
Wylie said he believed it was possible that Cambridge Analytica was a target of the Russian security services and that Kogan's computer could have been hacked during his visits there.

Scientist: Didn't know data used to target voters

In response, Kogan told CNN, "Mr. Wylie is confusing fantasy for probable" and said he did not travel to Russia while he was working for Cambridge Analytica in 2014.
"Mr. Wylie has proven once again that he has a very active imagination without actual knowledge to back it up. As with his claims about the usefulness of the data, his claims here also quickly fall apart under any sensible scrutiny," Kogan told CNN.

        Former clients

After the hearing, Wylie said he was happy both Republican and Democratic lawmakers had attended.
"Although Cambridge Analytica may have supported particular candidates in US elections, I am not here to point fingers. The firm's political leanings are far less relevant than the broader vulnerabilities this scandal has exposed," his written testimony read.
Among lawmakers on the Senate Judiciary Committee questioning Wylie were Republican Sens. Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Ted Cruz of Texas. Both have operated campaigns that were Cambridge Analytica clients.
Cambridge Analytica announced earlier this month that it was shutting down its operations and would announce bankruptcy proceedings.
Controversy around Cambridge Analytica's alleged misuse of Facebook data raised a host of new questions about the social media giant's role in the public discourse and elections, and helped prompt renewed scrutiny in Washington, where last month Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified before committees in both houses of Congress.
On Tuesday, The New York Times reported that Cambridge Analytica was under investigation by the Department of Justice and the FBI.

Anthony Bourdains Journey Deep Into the Heart of Trump Country: I Was Utterly Disarmed

Democrats Flip a Pennsylvania Seat, Making 41 Since Trumps Inauguration

Democrats flipped another seat in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives on Tuesday night, bringing the total number of state legislative flips to 41 since Donald Trumps inauguration.

Helen Tai, the Democratic candidate running in the Bucks County Pennsylvania House District 178, defeated Republican Wendi Thomas on Tuesday night. The election was called after Republican Scott Petri resigned to work as the executive director of the Philadelphia Parking Authority. In the district, President Trump narrowly won 50-47, but underperformed 2012 presidential candidate Mitt Romney who won 56-43 against former president Obama.

In a sign of the growing importance of these local races to national Democrats, former vice president Joe Biden weighed in with his endorsement for Tai this month. Former Maryland governor Martin OMalley, whose PAC Win Back Your State is focusing on these down-ballot races, also endorsed Tai and he recently made an in-person appearance ather campaign office.

That combination of endorsements may have helped in another state legislative contest earlier this year in Florida, where Democrat Margaret Good easily flipped a Florida seat.

Since Trumps inauguration, Democrats and specifically the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee have been working to capitalize on enthusiasm for various smaller contests to influence change at a local level as well as provide a metric for the upcoming midterm elections.

They have been successful in a number of typically red districts like one in Wisconsin earlier this year and even surprises in Oklahoma as far back as July 2017.
