Eastern Michigan spent $23 million on sports in 2017

YPSILANTI, MI - Eastern Michigan University used $23.1million of institutional funds to subsidize its $32.3million athletics budget during 2017, according to financial figures reported to the NCAA.NCAA financial disclosure documents, obtained by The Ann Arbor News in a Freedom of Information Act Request, reveal that EMU spent $1.64 million less on athletics in 2017, compared to 2015.The $23.1million spent in 2017 equals $1,040 spent per student last year to subsidize the athletics budget. The university made news last week when it announced plans to slash that budget by an addition $2.4million by cutting four sports - softball, wrestling program, men's swimming and diving and women's tennis - as the university aims to erase an overall budget deficit between $4.5million and $5.5million.Last month, EMU announced it was cutting nearly 60 staff positions to help erase the shortfall. The cost of the football program remains a target of criticism from faculty and staff at the university. While EMU's athletic programs have trimmed their budgets as a whole, the football program spent around $124,000 more in direct and indirect institutional support in 2017 than it did in 2015.EMU AAUP President Judith Kullberg suggested the university consider dropping from its status as a Division I institution and affiliation with the Mid-American Conference (MAC) to lower the subsidy of its athletics budget while allowing more students to compete."EMU administrators have cut back on course offerings, laid off staff, left positions unfilled, and outsourced essential student services," Kullberg said last week."In this environment, it's not sustainable for EMU to spend more than $20 million a year from its own funds to subsidize football and other NCAA Division I sports teams. Here's a look at EMU's funding of the four sports being eliminated, as well as its funding of the football program. As one of four programs the MAC requires participation in to maintain conference affiliation, EMU Athletic Director Scott Weatherbee was clear that the university was not consideration the elimination of the football program.Division I FBS requires schools to sponsor a minimum of 16 sports, and the MAC requires member universities to sponsor football, men's basketball, women's basketball and volleyball."It wasn't even an option to look at that," Weatherbee said during an emotion press conference announcing the sports program cuts last week.Weatherbee also dismissed the concept of EMU making the switch to Division II to curb expenses, citing a lack of support from President James Smith and the Board of Regents.Eastern Michigan answers the question: Why not cut football? "If you are going to drop down to Division II, is that the reputation we want? We compare ourselves to a Western Michigan, a Central Michigan, a Toledo and Bowling Green.Do we want to all of a sudden compare ourselves to Oakland (Division I), Saginaw Valley or Grand Valley? Those are obviously questions the president and th
