Matilda (1996) is my favorite nostalgic feel-good movie. When I was a kid, my mom told me about a teacher who’d been incredibly mean to her at school, so when I saw Miss Trunchbull, I immediately made a connection and was hooked. As a kid, I was pretty big on magic, and I loved seeing Madilta use her telekinetic powers, and I think almost all of us can remember the feeling of triumph we felt when we saw Bruce manage to eat Miss Trunchbull’s cake against the odds. “But what happened to the cast of Matilda?” I hear you ask. Well, you’re about to find out.

1. Mara Wilson – Matilda

Unlike a lot of child actors, Mara Wilson didn’t fall prey to the ‘curse’. However, she has faded into obscurity. Despite a promising start a child actor, she didn’t act for over 12 years and claimed that her time on the big screen was over, but made a return to acting in Billie Bob Joe (2015). Whilst she was on her break from acting, she earned a degree in drama and became a writer.

2. Danny DeVito – Mr. Wormwood

Needless to say, Danny DeVito has continued acting consistently since playing Mr. Wormwood in Matilda. He’s best-known for his older films like Batman Returns (1992), but since 2011 he’s acted in the hit sitcom It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He got his star on the Hollywood walk of fame in 2011. His latest movie is Animal Crackers, which was released in June 2017.

3. Rhea Perlman – Mrs. Wormwood

Rhea Perlman has consistently been working as an actress since starring in Matilda. Her recent movies include I’ll See You in My Dreams (2015) and Sing (2016). She’s also had a successful career has a children’s author, writing the Otto Undercover books.

4. Brian Levinson – Michael Wormwood

Unlike Wilson, Brian Levinson has completely faded into obscurity, and he only acted once after Matilda in an episode of Seinfeld called ‘The Apology’ in 1997. But he did turn up to the Matilda cast reunion in 2013. There’s few movies from the mid ’90s that have endured in the popularity as much as Matilda. It’s now a children’s classic that will no doubt be enjoyed by many generations to come. Everyone loves an underdog story, and Matilda is certainly one of the best.

5. Embeth Davidtz – Miss Honey

Whilst Embeth Davidtz best-loved role is without question as Miss Honey, she’s been acting prolifically since starring in Matilda. She’s appeared in a number of TV shows including Citizen Baines, ScrubsMad Men, Californication, and In Treatment.

6. Pam Ferris – Agatha Trunchbull

I have to admit that Pam Ferris’ role as Miss Trunchbull has to be one of the best examples of villainy in a movie. She’s kept that up, playing Harry Potter’s wicked Aunt Marge in 2004. Since 2012, she’s had a recurring role in the British TV show Call the Midwife.

7. Paul Reubens – FBI Agent Bob

Made famous by his role as Pee-wee Herman, Paul Reubens’ career has been overshadowed by a scandal involving an x-rated incident in a movie theatre. He’s tried to make numerous comebacks since Matilda, and his biggest role since then has been in Pee-wee’s Big Holiday (2016).

8. Tracey Walter – FBI Agent Bill

Amazingly, Tracey Walter has appeared in a staggering 100 movies and TV shows since Matilda. He’s got a reputation for playing henchmen, and some of his biggest successes to date include It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Monk. Matilda is the movie adaptation of British author Roald Dahl’s book of the same name, which was published in 1998. It was said by critics that “while the movie diverges from Roald Dahl, it nonetheless captures the book’s spirit”.

9. Kiami Davael – Lavender

It’s lovely when people who meet as kids and stay friends years later and that was certainly the case for Mara Wilson and Kiami Davael who remain friends to this day. Like Wilson, Davael didn’t act much after Matilda and has since focused her efforts on carving out a career for herself as a singer and writer. She earned a degree in psychology in 2008.

10. Jacqueline Steiger – Amanda Thripp

Children should be allowed to be kids if that’s what they want to be, and, like many other child stars from Matilda, Jaqueline Steiger took a long break from the big screen. She returned to acting in 2014 by appearing in the short film Rise of the Kitchen Appliances.

11. Jimmy Karz – Bruce Bogtrotter

What’s Bruce up to now? He’s training to be a doctor! Appropriately enough, his last acting credit was in 1998 in an episode of ER. But he knows how great the chocolate cake eating scene was and recreated it in 2013. So there you have it. That’s what the cast of Matilda are up to now. I don’t know about you, but I’m certainly glad that none of its child stars fell prey to the notorious curse. They’ve all happy, healthy adults – even if they’re no longer acting!
