‘Outlander’ Season 3 is ‘incredibly romantic,’ so prepare to swoon

When Outlander returns for Season 3 this September, we'll have to come to terms with seeing Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) living separate lives at least for a while and a new featurette from Starz gives us a glimpse at what those lives look like.

"When we saw Claire last in 1968 she had just realized that Jamie did not actually die at Culloden, but she doesn't know anything about what he's done since," Balfe points out.

The show has to cover the 20 years that the two spend apart before they can reunite, both of them trying to rebuild their lives after seemingly losing their soulmate forever.

For Claire, that means trying to make it work with her first husband, Frank (Tobias Menzies), for the benefit of Brianna (Sophie Skelton), Jamie's daughter, who Frank has agreed to raise as his own.

"For two decades, no one came into her life that in any way came close to Jamie," Balfe reveals.

Jamie loses both his wife and child when Claire returns through the stones, and for a while it seems he has no reason to go on.

"When Jamie survives the battle of Culloden, he has a great sense of loss because he was expecting to die," Heughan says. "Jamie is in hiding for many years on the estate in Lallybroch. He's still holding on to Claire, he still sees her in the shadows. And it takes his family, his sister and also Fergus to really remind him what he has to live for."

While both characters experience a great sense of loss, Balfe previews that "this season is incredibly romantic... This is a couple that lasts a lifetime."

It might take a while for the starcrossed lovers to reunite, but we have a feeling it'll be worth the wait.

Outlander Season 3 premieres Sunday, Sept. 10 at 8 p.m. on Starz.
