How many times in your life have you wished that Will Smith was your dad? You could bond over your mutual love of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and you’d be entitled to walk every red carpet in Hollywood by association to the man who brought the world ‘Get Jiggy Wit It’.

Combine these factors with Will Smith’s $230 million net worth and you’re surely living a life that most people can only dream of. However, according to the I Am Legend star’s daughter, Willow, growing up in the spotlight is “excruciatingly terrible”. Speaking to Girl Gaze 17-year-old Willow, famous for her hit single ‘Whip My Hair’ which she released when she was just 10 years old, revealed what it is really like to be the child of an A-list celebrity, and it isn’t as halcyon as you may think. “I’m going to be completely and utterly honest, it’s absolutely terrible,” the only daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith bluntly explained when asked how it felt to be so famous, so young. “Growing up and trying to figure out your life… while people feel like they have some sort of entitlement to know what’s going on is absolutely, excruciatingly terrible – and the only way to get over it is to go into it.” “Go into it” is exactly what the California native has done. From her debut acting role as a seven-year-old in her father’s box-office smash movie, I Am Legend, to her platinum-certified song ‘Whip My Hair’ which reached #2 in the charts in the UK. “When you’re born into it, there are two choices that you have; I’m either going to try to go into it completely and help from the inside, or… no one is going to know where I am… and I’m really going to take myself completely out of the eye of society. There’s really no in-between.” “You can’t change your face. You can’t change your parents. You can’t change any of those things. So I feel like most kids like me end up going down a spiral of depression, and the world is sitting there looking at them through their phones; laughing and making jokes and making memes at the crippling effect that this lifestyle has on the psyche.” You may question how Willow can be so negative about an industry that she is fully immersing herself in to. But it would appear that it hasn’t always been the young star’s choice. In an interview as part of Jay-Z’s album 4:44, Willow’s father admitted that he may have applied too much pressure to his young daughter. He recalled how Willow had made it very clear that she didn’t want to tour her song ‘Whip My Hair’. However, ever the professional, Will ignored Willow’s pleas to come home and insisted that she commit to her tour schedule. That was when Willow took matters into her own hands. “We came downstairs and she had shaved her head bald. She shaved her head bald in the middle of her ‘Whip My Hair’ tour. I was like, ‘Oh, shit’,” the 49-year-old actor recalled. “I’m looking at that girl and I’m like, ‘Got it. I understand. You will not have this trouble out of me ever again. Let’s go, baby. We can go’ … [I] wasn’t paying any attention whatsoever to what was going on emotionally with this beautiful little creature in front of me.” However, Willow is far from ungrateful of the life she has received. “I have everything that I could possibly imagine. I have a family that loves me and that’s… more than most kids have. And it’s really awesome for me to experience this life… because most kids don’t have this life,” the youngster once said. “If I had to change one thing about my life, it would probably be, I wouldn’t be famous. Because when you’re famous, it’s so hard.” Meanwhile, her elder brother Jaden is appearing to thoroughly enjoy his life in the spotlight. The 19-year-old recently moved into his own $4 million mansion where he has apparently caused chaos with his neighbors, including the Kardashians. “He has a sense of entitlement, bravado.
